Lisa M. Spain
Dr. Spain was trained in molecular biology, blood cell developmental biology, and immunology. She is currently the Scientific Project Lead for Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet, an international consortium of clinical centers and affiliate sites for clinical trials for the prevention of type 1 diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet screens relatives of people with type 1 diabetes for autoantibodies, and those with risk are offered participation in prevention trials, or followed over time for risk progression or disease onset. Dr. Spain is also the Program Director for The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY), an international epidemiological study of environmental correlates of autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes in children with genetic risk. TEDDY children are followed from birth to age 15, with intensive data collection including biological and environmental samples, diet measures and records, clinical records of infections, vaccinations, and psychosocial factors. Dr. Spain also maintains and fosters type 1 diabetes and autoimmune endocrine diseases research through a portfolio of grants on the pathogenic mechanisms and etiology of autoimmunity.
